Therapy Services at United

YSS (Youth and Shelter Services of Ames) has a partnership with United to provide school-based mental health therapists. These therapists will be able to meet via Zoom at United with students. The students will have a time set where they can have a private place to meet online with the therapist.

The process to receive therapy is as follows:

  1. A parent may contact the school counselor to ask for a referral to be made by the school to the therapist. Or the counselor will identify students that are in need of therapy services. The counselor will contact the parents for their approval and discuss what services they can receive.

  2. With parent permission, the counselor will then fill out a referral form and send it to YSS.

  3. YSS will then contact the parents for more information.

  4. The therapist will schedule an assessment with the child. This could be done virtually at home or the child may come to the YSS office in Ames.

  5. Once this assessment is completed and the therapist is able to identify the needs of the student, the therapist will schedule with the school counselor a time to meet virtually with the student at school.

  6. The student will then be allowed to have a quiet and secure space to talk with the therapist. They will use a school-provided computer.
Mission Statement: “Learning, Thriving, Belonging”

Motto: “Comets, it’s time to shine!”

At United Community, we follow the Responsive Classroom Core Belief:
In order to be successful in and out of school, students need to learn a set of social and emotional competencies—cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self-control—and a set of academic competencies—academic mindset, perseverance, learning strategies, and academic behaviors.
